Gregory the Great: Scene, celebrating Mass -- In foreground, cardinal, wearing cardinal's hat, with joined hands raised, and tonsured cleric, holding triple crowned papal tiara, both kneeling, flanking, and attending Gregory the Great, facing backwards, tonsured, wearing priest's vestments, kneeling, raising hands before draped altar, on which is open book with pseudo-inscriptions on stand, chalice draped with cloth, and candlestick;
above which appears half-figure of Christ, in rayed aureole, blood flowing from wounds in head, side, and hands, with right hand indicating side, surrounded by instruments of the passion, including column, scourge, withes, dice, cross, sponge on reed, spear, three nails, and lantern.
