Evangelist, John: Scene, on Patmos -- Evangelist John, nimbed, wearing grisaille robe, writes with stylus in right hand on page resting on his right knee. Evangelist symbol (eagle), nimbed, holding stylus case and ink pot (?) in beak, wings lifted, perches on rock at left, lifting left claw.
Scene in landscape with water, and with city in background.
Miniature enclosed in architectural frame decorated with sculptural ornament including relief of man's head and columns with foliate capitals. In margins, putti on top of frame holding twisted cord attached to clump of foliage; putti in right margin grasping column of frame; another in right margin grasping cord; and in lower margin, beneath frame, head flanked by wings.
