L’Esperance ou Consolation des Trois Vertus: Scene, Alain Chartier pursued by Melancholy -- Alain Chartier, inscribed ALAIN CHARTIER, wearing hat, head inclined, walks with arms crossed on breast. He is followed by Melancholy, inscribed MELANCOLIE (Personification, Vice: Sadness? or Personification, Vice: Anger?), wearing knotted headdress and garment with jagged hem, extending, with both hands, her cloak toward the author as if to cover him. Another man wearing hat stands behind her leaning against wall. Scene in bedroom with canopy bed, chair and cabinet on which are objects; window in back wall; door at right. Initial A decorated with foliate ornament on gold ground decorated with three roses.
