1) David: pursued by Saul, and Saul: Messengers reporting Philistines -- Six soldiers, wearing chain mail, armed with lances, some mounted, and Saul, crowned, in chain mail, armed with bannered lance, mounted, all pursue David and soldiers, all wearing chain mail, mounted, some armed with swords and others with lances, on mountain. In foreground, messenger, wearing cap, extends letter with seal toward the king, kneeling beside saddled horse. To right of the mountain, mounted Philistine soldiers in chain mail, armed with lances, one holding buckler, await.

2) Saul: returning to meet Philistines -- Saul, crowned, holding buckler and bannered lance, and soldiers armed with lances, all in chain mail, mounted, depart to left, followed by mounted soldier in chain mail, holding lance with heraldic banner decorated with dragon. To other side of mountain ("Rock of division"), David and two soldiers, in chain mail, armed with lances, mounted, depart to right, approaching city gate.
