Gregory the Great: Scene, celebrating Mass -- Gregory, nimbed, wearing chasuble and alb, stands, hands raised, before altar on which is open book, chalice with wafer, and triple crowned papal tiara surmounted by cross. He is looking up at half figure of Christ, amid rays, showing wounds with blood from side flowing into chalice on altar. At sides of altar are curtains and behind is altarpiece with woman holding infant, possibly Virgin Mary and Christ Child, flanked by two figures. Gregory is flanked by two men, one, hands raised, and another, possibly monk or acolyte, holding open book, and by man, right hand raised, looking up at Christ, kneeling at prie dieu on which is open book. Scene is within church with row of windows and architectural decoration.
Margins decorated with border of foliate and floreate ornament.
