Gregory the Great, nimbed, wearing triple crowned tiara and cope is seated on throne, supporting cross-staff with right arm, leaning toward desk on which is scroll. He holds knife with left hand and writes with pen in right hand. Cupboard behind the desk is open; two books are visible inside. In background flask rests on one of three books and scroll on shelf.
Interior scene with tile floor and leaded windows.
Margins decorated with border of floreate ornament inhabited by bird, possibly wren. Scroll inscribed APPONE (sic) COR TUUM AD DOCTRINAM MEAM. P(RO)U(ER)B(IA) XXII (Proverbs 22:17, variant).
