Evangelist Matthew, nimbed, wearing cap, is seated on bench at table on which is slanted desk. He is writing with right hand in, and resting his left hand holding knife or scraper on, open book on the desk. Inkpot and pen case are on the table in foreground. Evangelist symbol (angel) stands opposite the desk, with both hands holding open book face out.
Margins decorated with border of floreate ornament including viola and inhabited by two birds and fly.
