Boethius: Text, De Consolatione Philosophiae, Book I -- Boethius, wearing hat, supporting his head with his right hand, semi-reclines on canopied bed. Personification of Philosophy, crowned with veil and wimple, holding globe with right hand on her lap, raising left hand, is seated next to the bed. Circular chair is next to head of bed.
Margins decorated with border of vine scroll and foliate ornament and inhabited by lion. In upper margin, scroll inscribed with motto of Antoine de Bourgogne NUL NE SI FROTE. In right margin, flaming escutcheon with heraldry of Antoine de Bourgogne, and escutcheon with his heraldry surmounted by helm, decorated with collar of the Order of St. Michael and supported by two lions. Motto and flaming escutcheon repeated in lower right and lower margin.
