Gregory the Great: Scene, celebrating Mass -- Gregory the Great, tonsured, with joined hands, kneels at draped altar on which are open book on stand, and chalice. Behind him are three clerics, tonsured, kneeling, one holding triple armed processional cross, and another man, kneeling with joined hands. Above altar, three-quarter figure of Christ, nimbed, as Man of Sorrows, wearing short loincloth, right hand on breast, extending and showing wound in left hand, stands in sarcophagus in front of tau cross. He is flanked by instruments of Passion including two scourges, three nails, pincers, ladder, sponge on spear, spear, coins and column.
Margins decorated with border of floreate ornament including rose and daisy, and inhabited by ladybug.
