1) Macarius of Rome: Scene, hearing Tale of Monks -- At left, Macarius of Rome, nimbed, bearded, seated in mouth of cave, beside tau-staff and between two lions, with left hand raised toward Theophilus the Monk, Sergius the Monk, and Hyginus the Monk, all nimbed, tonsured and wearing monk’s habits, one wearing cap with hands on tau-staff, all seated on ground.
2) Macarius of Rome: Scene, guided by Angel to Ass -- At right, youthful Macarius of Rome, nimbed, with left hand holding rod and with right hand raised toward nimbed, flying angel, lowering right hand toward him, the Macarius behind bridled ass, its back tied with blanket, walking in landscape with trees.
