Evangelist, John: boiled in Oil -- Evangelist John, nimbed, nude, stands with joined hands in kettle on stand with fire below, looking toward Domitian, wearing hat, holding scepter with left hand, seated on throne. Two of three men stand behind the kettle holding poles and the third kneels in front of kettle stoking fire with long handled two-pronged fork. Two groups of men look on from background and from beyond wall.
Margin, lower:
1) Evangelist Luke, nimbed, seated writing with right hand on scroll held by left hand on his lap. Evangelist symbol (ox), nimbed, sits at right.
2) Evangelist symbol (angel), nimbed, kneels before Evangelist Matthew, nimbed, holding quill (?) in extended right hand, and scroll on lap with left hand.
3) Evangelist symbol (lion), nimbed, sits next to Evangelist Mark, nimbed, raising quill (?) in right hand and holding scroll on lap with left hand.
