Gregory the Great: Scene, celebrating Mass -- Christ, nimbed, wearing loin cloth, bleeding from wounds, as half-figure in sarcophagus on top of draped altar with open book with pseudo-inscription, and covered chalice, appears before Gregory the Great, nimbed, tonsured, standing with wafer (host) raised in both hands. Above him is triple crown papal tiara with infulae. Behind him kneel two tonsured priests, including one holding the hem of Gregory's vestment, and an acolyte, kneeling beside two lighted candles.
Margins with floreate and vinescroll ornament, inhabited by two birds.
