Miniature, column, right: Lawrence of Rome: Scene, Martyrdom -- Lawrence of Rome, nimbed, tonsured, nude, with wrists and ankles bound reclining on gridiron amid flames. To left, one of two executioners prods the gridiron with pitchfork, the other, wearing hat, partly kneeling uses bellows. At far left, two men, wearing hats, stand in conversation with each other. Scene in hilly landscape with silhouette of windmill and city buildings in background. Miniature at beginning of Vigil and Chapter in Matins for Feast of Lawrence of Rome (08.10). Margins decorated on three sides with scrolling floreate and foliate decoration, inhabited by half figures of two prophets, wearing hats, emerging from clouds, holding scrolls inscribed MISER ASSASTI and IA(M) U(N)SA ET MA(N)D(UCA) (?)
