Miniature, column, right: Denis of Paris: carrying Head -- Denis of Paris, nimbed, wearing bishop’s vestments, with gloved hands holding head, mitered with infulae, and right arm holding crozier. To left, Rusticus of Paris, nimbed, blindfolded, with joined hands raised, kneeling beneath raised scimitar, held by executioner. At far left background, group of nimbed companions (most with only nimbi visible), the foremost with joined hands raised. Scene on shore in hilly landscape with city buildings in background. Miniature and initial O, enclosing angel, playing lute, at beginning of First Lesson for Feast of Denis of Paris (10.09). Initial A enclosing half figure of Jerome, wearing cardinal’s hat and vestments, at beginning of Collect for Feast of Jerome (09.30). Margins decorated on three sides with scrolling floreate and foliate decoration inhabited by busts of six helmeted figures, possibly soldiers, emerging out of foliate buds (left); and half figures of men, wearing hats, both with hands raised, amid foliage (lower).
