Jerome: in Penance -- Beside cave, Jerome, nimbed, wearing hair shirt, kneels on one knee amid thorns before crucifix, inscribed at top I.N.R.I, on which Christ, rayed cross as nimbus, wearing crown of thorns, is affixed with three nails, blood issuing from wounds. Cardinal's vestments are scattered on ground. Lion appears to left of Jerome.
