Initial D: David: anointed -- Beneath three trefoil arches, youthful David, kneeling, with joined hands raised, his head poured with liquid from upturned vessel held in right hand of Samuel, nimbed, with left hand extended to the David’s head, both against gold background (Psalm 027 (Vulg., 026)). the initial’s ascender extending across left, upper, and right margins partly formed by hybrid animal head biting stave, the whole perched on by mouse-like animal (upper) and crow (right). In left, lower, and right margins, marginal extension terminating in hybrid arched with left hand extending bow and with right hand drawn, and hybrid soldier, with right hand holding sword and with left hand raising shield.
