Upper half: David: receiving Absalom -- At left, Absalom and David, crowned, embracing; men at right looking on. From chapter 14 of II Samuel (Vulg., II Kings). Absalom: Death -- At right, man watching archer, wearing quiver at waist, shooting arrows into body of Absalom, hanging from tree by his hair, bleeding from wounds, sword at waist. Horseman wearing hat, hands joined, and riderless horse, at right. From chapter 18 of II Samuel (Vulg., II Kings). Lower half: David: rebuked by Joab -- At left, David, crowned, gesturing with right hand, raising scepter with left hand, seated on throne with canopy looking toward Joab, wearing hat, gesturing with both hands; group of men standing behind Joab.
