Upper half: David: receiving Absalom -- At left, Absalom and David, crowned, embracing; men at right looking on. From chapter 14 of II Samuel (Vulg., II Kings). Absalom: Death -- At right, man watching archer, wearing quiver at waist, shooting arrows into body of Absalom, hanging from tree by his hair, bleeding from wounds, sword at waist.
