Jerome looks up toward crucifix, standing in tree stump from which hangs cardinal's hat. Skull is next to the stump. Red garment hangs on tree behind Jerome.
Scene in landscape with building on side of mountain with curving staircase; man walking; man astride one of two camels.
Margins decorated with border of flowers and plants including, speedwell, rose, red currant, and inhabited by butterflies and caterpillar.
