Claudius of Besançon, wearing miter with infulae, gloves and bishop's vestments, raises right hand in blessing and holds with left hand book and crozier. He is flanked by two heraldic escutcheons (Or double headed eagle displayed sable, beaked and membered gules) and (Quarterly 1 and 4 argent an eagle displayed sable, 2 and 3 quarterly, 1 and 4 argent a semy of pellets, 2 and 3 gules, a cross or overall). Above his head is scroll inscribed O DESOLATORUM CONSO(LATOR) CAPTIUORUM
