Gregory the Great: Scene, celebrating Mass -- Gregory, nimbed, tonsured, wearing priest's vestments, stands with joined hands raised before draped altar, looking up toward vision of Christ, as half figure, wearing short loin cloth, emanating rays, standing with arms extended (orant), surrounded by instruments of the passion, including cross, ladder, spear, and lantern. Behind Gregory kneels tonsured monk, holding hem of Gregory's vestment and lighted candle. Three other men, including two tonsured monks with joined hands raised, and man wearing hat, witness scene. Scene in church with columns and arched openings.
Margins with architectural ornament; in top margin is pseudo (?) inscription; left margin with flowers and candle in candlestick; and putto and bird in lower margin.
