Christ: bearing Cross -- Virgin Mary, nimbed and veiled, with joined hands, and Evangelist John, nimbed, stand behind Christ, rayed cross as nimbus, carrying cross over left shoulder with both hands. He wears crown of thorns, blood issuing from wounds. Simon of Cyrene holds lower end of cross. Behind figures is large crowd of soldiers, in armor, carrying spears. In background, beyond rocky outcropping, are buildings of city and hill, surmounted by castle.
