Eagle, nimbed, holding scroll, issues from arc of heaven toward Evangelist John, nimbed, seated on cushioned bench with footstool. He holds knife, in left hand, and pen, in right hand, and writes in book inscribed with John 1:1 on draped lectern.
Border decorated with foliate ornament contains two medallions with half-figures of men, one possibly scribe.
