Stephen Protomartyr: Stoning -- Stephen, nimbed and tonsured, wearing deacon’s vestments, kneeling, hands extended, is bleeding from wounds on head. Two torturers stand at right, each raising stone in hand. Three men, wearing hats, one with arms crossed, stand at left. Margins decorated with border of floreate ornament including viola, thistle, strawberry, and cornflower, and inhabited by fantastic bird and snail. Text is invitatory for Matins on 12.26, feast of Stephen Protomartyr.
