Benedict of Montecassino: Scene, visited by Shepherds -- Benedict of Montecassino, nimbed, wearing surplice over monk’s habit, emerges from mouth of cave, holding book. To right, among three shepherds, one wears hood, two raise right hands, and the third, with water-bottle tied to belt, plays bagpipe, all looking toward the Benedict, before flock of sheep, two cows and goat. Scene in hilly landscape with dog on hill, buildings and crenellated walls in background. Miniature within frame at end of Chapter 1 of Book II of Dialogues; Shepherds see Benedict of Montecassino through bushes and approach him.
