Column, left: Christ: Betrayal and Arrest -- Christ, cross-nimbed, partly embraced by Judas, and with left wrist grasped by soldier, wearing full armor and holding shield, among group of at least ten other soldiers and possibly one man, wearing hat. In foregound, Apostle Peter, nimbed, with left hand gathering garment and with right hand raising scimitar over kneeling Malchus, both arms raised shielding face (Apostle, Peter: cutting off Ear of Malchus). Scene in hilly landscape, with wattled fence in far right foreground and city buildings in background. Illustration for First Nocturn in Matins for Good Friday. Margins decorated on three sides with scrolling floreate and foliate decoration inhabited by half figures of two prophets, wearing hats, emerging from clouds, both holding scrolls inscribed P(AR)TITI SU(N)T UES(TIMENTA) from John 19 and ASTITERU(N)T REG(ES) from Psalm 002 (right).
