Miniature, column, right: Apostle, Paul: Execution -- Group of men (most with only heads visible), including possibly one High Priest, wearing conical hat, with left hand lowered toward head of Apostle Paul, nimbed, blindfolded, kneeling beside scabbard on ground, and with joined hands holding scroll inscribed IN MANUS TUAS. Behind him, executioner, wearing belted purse, raising sword. Scene in hilly landscape. Miniature at beginning of First Lesson in Matins for Feast of Commemoration of Apostle Paul (06.25); although illustration is for Feast of Martyrdom of John and Paul of Rome (06.27). Margins decorated on three sides with scrolling floreate and foliate decoration, inhabited by half figures of two prophets, wearing hats, emerging from clouds, holding scrolls inscribed NU(N)C SCIO UERE and ERIPUIT ME DE (left).
