Miniature, column, right: Apostle, Bartholomew: Martyrdom -- Beneath rays, Apostle Bartholomew, nimbed, nude, reclining on trestle table, with both wrists and right ankle grasped by three of four executioners, with their other hands holding knife to the Bartholomew, the fourth holding knife to abdomen of the Bartholomew. In background, crowned king, gesturing accompanied by two male attendants, wearing hats. Scene in partly covered room with tiled floor, hilly landscape in far distance also visible through window. Miniature at beginning of Collect in 1st Vespers for Feast of Apostle Bartholomew (08.24). Margins decorated on three sides with scrolling floreate and foliate decoration, inhabited by bust of six figures, some possibly helmeted soldiers, emerging out of foliate buds.
