Christ: Flight into Egypt, Rest -- Nimbed Virgin Mary, seated against rock wall, holds on her lap nude Christ Child, rayed nimbus, turning and extending left hand toward fruit (cherries) in basket held by wingless angel, accompanied by nimbed youth, possibly James, Son of Joseph. Covered basket lies at the Virgin's feet. At left, Joseph the Carpenter, nimbed, wearing hat, stands on bridge, holding reins of bridled ass, drinking from stream.
In background, shepherd, leaning on pedum, watches over flock of sheep (Scene, Occupational: Pastoral). Two horsemen approach group of soldiers.
Frame:
Miniature within elaborate architectural frame decorated with floral ornament inhabited by putti. Two putti hold scroll inscribed with incipit of Vespers of the Hours of the Virgin.
On left frame is medallion inscribed with motto, ROSE APRES LIVER.
